Multi-order picking is available for both sales orders (“Multi Sales Order Pick” extension module) and the withdrawal of material for production (“Production Multi-Picking”).

The two extension modules allow you to implement two-step order picking in your warehouse. In multi-order picking, multiple items are picked and then allocated to the orders at the packing table in a second step. Cluster picking is also possible, which involves placing multiple containers on your trolley and sorting the appropriate items into them for each order. Whichever way you want to structure your workflow, multi-order picking will take your warehouse processes to the next level.

Simple, error-free, digital

Multi-order picking is a type of multi-step picking. Unlike one-step picking, several orders are combined in a digital pick order and processed together. By consolidating the items, you save yourself multiple trips to the warehouse shelves and become more flexible in your picking processes. In the second step, the items are then assigned to the appropriate production or sales orders. As the WMS software is connected to your ERP system, there is no longer any need for subsequent manual entry and your inventories are automatically updated in the ERP system. Whether in one-step or two-step picking, mobile posting via handheld scanners provides you with real-time stock transparency and avoids errors when it comes to order picking and the provision of material.

How digital multi-order picking with WMS software works

To get started with digital multi-order picking, open the appropriate extension module on your mobile device: “Multi Sales Order Pick” for sales orders, “Production Multi-Picking” for production orders. You can now either search for specific orders using various filter options or display a list of all open orders. You can select these orders for multi-order picking by clicking the respective orders. For a better overview, all selected orders are automatically assigned a color and numerical code.

Once all the desired orders have been selected, the second step takes you to the digital pick order. This is where the principle of multi-order picking comes into play: The items in the orders are consolidated and sorted by item number. The warehouse management software then suggests how to perform order picking based on efficient routes. One especially practical feature is that it is also possible to get further information about the item in this module with just a click via “Stock Info”. After scanning the item number and entering the quantity, you post the withdrawal—and you’re done! All movements of goods are automatically updated in the ERP system.

Processing two-step picking with a barcode scanner solution

The picked items can be distributed in different ways. In the case of multi-order picking, identical goods can be collected in a shared container. The container is then taken to a packing table and, in the second step, the items are assigned to the respective orders. The advantage of this method is that order picking can be carried out very quickly and different types of products can be picked regardless of the container sizes.

Another option is cluster picking. In this case, the picking trolley is equipped with several containers, each of which is assigned to an order. When several items are picked, they can be sorted directly into the appropriate container. This eliminates the need for sorting at the packing table and orders can be prepared immediately for shipping or production. This method is particularly suitable for companies with small items and a high volume of orders.

A lot of time can be saved in order picking in particular. If multi-order picking is additionally supported by a picking trolley with Pick by Light/Put to Light modules, it makes the process even more intuitive and efficient. The picking trolley has various containers and spaces with the modules, which are each assigned to an order by scanning.

Upon commencing the picking process, the modules automatically light up to indicate the containers into which the goods are to be placed. The correct quantity is also displayed on the modules and the process is confirmed at the touch of a button. You can then move on to the next storage bin. This means that picking for production or sales orders can be completed in just a few steps and posted in the ERP system.

Up to eight orders are processed simultaneously using the L-mobile barcode scanner solution. The items are recorded in a digital pick order and color-coded so that they can be assigned directly to the appropriate containers on the picking trolley.
