To perform controlled putaway, select the corresponding putaway document in the mobile data collection solution for Business Central and MS Dynamics NAV (Navision). You can filter based on various parameters to select the correct document. This makes it possible to display all open documents and filter either by the order number or document number or by the item number. After selecting the correct document, all information relating to this shipment is automatically and clearly displayed on a mobile device (barcode scanner, tablet, PDA). In the next step, the information relating to the warehouse putaway is easily and conveniently recorded on the go by scanning a barcode. This data, such as the current quantity moved and the storage bins where the goods have been put away, is transferred directly to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central/MS Dynamics NAV (Navision) while the physical putaway process is in progress.

One especially practical feature is that the free location search feature in the WMS for NAV and Business Central can be used to display free storage bins directly on your mobile device if the suggested storage bin is not available. Complete the mobile putaway process

Once the warehouse putaway process has been completed, warehouse personnel confirm the completion of the controlled putaway in the warehouse management software for NAV/Business Central. The document disappears from the mobile device and the employee can focus on the next warehouse putaway. The posted and registered putaways are processed further in accordance with the business logic of MS Dynamics NAV (Navision) or Business Central. Accordingly, the information is reported back to the respective source documents.

Putaway in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Navision)

Putaway is the process of storing goods in the warehouse. In contrast to the bin cards previously used to document warehouse putaway, nowadays the inventory is increased by posting a warehouse receipt in an IT system, followed by putaway by means of a putaway posting.MS Dynamics NAV (Navision) and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central offer two ways to process warehouse putaway. The inventory putaway can either be generated directly from a purchase order or from the warehouse receipt document. The warehouse receipt document is used for storage locations where the Navision or Business Central “Warehouse Receipt” document is used. This is also referred to as two-step goods receipt.

Creating a warehouse putaway from a purchasing document in Microsoft Dynamics NAV & Business Central

Before inventory putaway can be performed from a purchase document in NAV or Business Central, the purchasing department must first enter the purchase order in MS Dynamics NAV or Business Central. The information about the expected items, such as item number, storage bin code, ordered quantity, etc., is copied from the linked order. An additional column will also appear in the inventory putaway document, called “Quantity to Handle”. In practice, the “Quantity to Handle” corresponds to the quantity actually delivered.

Often, the warehouse putaway document is still printed out directly after creation in MS Dynamics NAV or Microsoft Dynamics Business Central without specifying the “Quantity to Handle” and passed on to the warehouse personnel. Now, during putaway, all information regarding the delivered items is noted down on the printed document. Once the goods have been put away, the information then has to be entered retrospectively at a desktop workstation. This involves adding or correcting the data in the inventory putaway document in Navision of Business Central. The document is then posted in NAV or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The inventory putaway is archived and the order lines are updated at the same time.

Generating a putaway in conjunction with a warehouse receipt document in Microsoft Dynamics NAV & Business Central

The warehouse receipt document within putaway usually consists of several purchase orders that are combined into one document in Navision or Business Central. Similar to the “warehouse putaway,” all information about the expected items, such as item number, storage bin code, ordered quantity, etc., is also transferred during putaway in connection with a Warehouse Receipt document. The putaway can then be printed out in list form for employees.Once the goods have been put away, the handwritten notes made by warehouse personnel have to be entered retrospectively in the warehouse putaway document in MS Dynamics NAV or Business Central from a desktop workstation. The warehouse putaway can now be registered in Navision or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and the lines of the source document updated accordingly.

Difficulty of warehouse putaway process in Microsoft Dynamics NAV & Business Central

In Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Business Central, putaway is primarily performed based on paper documents. This results in a constant time lag between the movement of goods and data transfer to Navision or Business Central, which makes it almost impossible to achieve complete transparency regarding stock levels. On the contrary, putaway in Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central can delay all subsequent postings. This is because if the goods are physically available in a storage bin but have not yet been posted in the system, it is not possible to post the withdrawal of these goods to a manufacturing order. Manual data transfers also result in extra administrative work and increase the risk of errors, for example, due to incorrect entries.
